Embracing Autumn

Hello Cozy Season!

Autumn is in full swing as we near the end of Sober October, a month-long challenge to abstain from alcohol. Sober October was a challenge I took on often in my 20s - proving to myself that I could get through the month without a drop of booze... well, until Halloween. I used to see the 31st as the day to reward myself, celebrating the season with, you guessed it, alcohol. But as I’ve evolved in my relationship with sobriety, I’ve come to realize that the best way to embrace autumn and the cooler months is to lean into the natural rhythm of change and growth that this season invites.

Autumn is the perfect time to cozy up, hibernate, and switch out the red wine for a warm, comforting tea. And there’s something so grounding about slowing down during this season of transition. If you’ve been taking part in Sober October, or are simply looking for ways to enjoy the autumn season without alcohol, here are a few tips to help you thrive:

1. Lean into Comfort Rituals The cooler weather invites us to create comforting routines. Consider swapping out your evening glass of wine for a soothing herbal tea. Whether it’s chamomile, peppermint, or cinnamon-infused, tea can offer a warm and relaxing way to unwind at the end of the day. Plus, there are so many creative non-alcoholic drink options that can feel festive - try a spiced apple cider or a turmeric latte for an autumnal treat.

2. Get Outdoors and Embrace the Change in Nature Autumn is a season of change, and it’s the perfect time to reflect on your own transitions. Get outside and take advantage of the cooler weather by going for a hike, a walk in the park, or even just sitting outside with a blanket. Being in nature can boost your mood, reduce stress, and provide clarity - making it easier to stay mindful of your health goals, whether they’re related to sobriety or not.

3. Create New Seasonal Traditions Instead of focusing on alcohol-centered activities, use autumn as an opportunity to create new traditions. Host a pumpkin carving night, have a cozy movie marathon, or start a book club with friends (with plenty of cozy blankets and hot cocoa). Finding joy in these simple, seasonal activities can help you associate the season with more than just the social drinking culture that often surrounds it.

4. Take Time to Reflect and Set Intentions for the Season The shift into autumn naturally invites a slower pace, which is the perfect opportunity to reflect on your goals and intentions. Whether you’re navigating Sober October or just adjusting to life without alcohol, use this time to journal about what you’ve learned during this month. How do you want to carry those lessons into the holiday season? Setting clear intentions now can help you stay grounded when life gets busier in the months to come.

5. Prioritize Self-Care and Rest The darker, cooler months can signal the need for rest. Give yourself permission to slow down and embrace cozy nights in. Light a candle, curl up with a good book, or take a warm bath with Epsom salts. Rest is essential, especially as we transition into a season that can sometimes feel heavy with obligations. By prioritizing your self-care, you’ll be able to maintain your energy and focus on your goals and personal growth.

As we near the end of Sober October, it's a good reminder that the lessons we've learned don't have to end with the month. Autumn is all about change, and it's the perfect time to build new habits and focus on what truly brings comfort and joy.
